Story Summary

“Changban po” 長坂坡 [On the Slopes of Changban] from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, hereafter Romance]. Set in the period leading up to the “Three Kingdoms” (220-265 CE), this episode tells the story of a heroic woman, Madame Mi, one of the wives of Liu Bei, who sacrifices herself to save Liu Bei’s only son and heir, who was not her own child. The love, loyalty, and selflessness of the woman is what the episode is about and performed by Sun Shujun, a brilliant female storytelling artist.
